Isadore 'Izzy' Alpert, 96, formerly of Duluth, passed away Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, in Sarasoa Memorial Hospital, Florida. Izzy was born in Duluth on Jan. 6, 1910, to Isaac and Lena (Batonik) Alpert. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1927, married Lillian Steinberg on Dec. 30, 1937, and together they raised three children. An innovative entrepreneur, Izzy started the first discount store in Northern Minnesota, Twin Ports Sales Company. He also built many homes, including Duluth's first condominium units. He and his partners bought the Lake Aire Motel in the 1960s. His partnerships grew into ZMC Hotels, which now operates over three dozen hotels throughout the country. Izzy was an active fundraising member of Tifereth Israel and Temple Israel, chaired the Jewish Federation, and was a key proponent of the building project that became Jewish Educational Center, which now houses Temple Israel. He was a member of the Lion's Club, AAD Temple Shrine, and a volunteer advocate with SCORE. Having lived seasonally in Florida since 1969, Iz and Lil moved there permanently in 2000. There he was active in Temple Beth Israel of Longboat Key and the Jewish Federation. He volunteered at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital and continued his advocacy with SCORE. Izzy gave to a wide range of charities and causes. He was an active, vibrant and honest man, respected for his fairness, generosity, and concern for others. He was a supportive boss, loyal friend, and an attentive and generous husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by Lillian, his wife of 69 years, his three children, Sheila Alpert of St. Paul, Minn., Mark (Judy) Alpert of Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth (James Bearden) of Rochester, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Nicole (Daniel) Ifcher of Brentwood, Calif., Jane Bearden of Malaysia and Emma Alpert of New Haven, Conn. FUNERAL SERVICE:11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, in Temple Israel, 1602 E. 2nd St., Rabbi Amy Bernstein, officiating. Internment in Tiferith Israel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorials are preferred to the charity of the donor's choice.
